If properly trained under a physician they can take incoming telephone messages and document these calls. A well trained medical assistant will know which messages are routine calls can wait a little while untill the doctor has a moment to go over them and which ones are emergencies need to be immediately forwarded to the doctor and call 911. However, medical assistants cannot diagnose and give advise without the doctor's knowledge and indtructions. 2. Medication orders - I am not sure what exactly you mean by taking medication orders over the phone - in reading your messag my initial thought was by whom??? Anyhow, let me just say that medical assistants can take a messages from patients who call into the doctor's office stating that their meds are about to run out - but again, this needs to be documented and presented to the doctor for approval. If the doctor approves them, the medical assistant is allowed to call the pharmacy, then notify the patient that the prescription was called in. Hope this helped.
